Magenta Goth Total cost of complete outfit ~ ?25

Dress
YOU NEED: long black sleeved dress; white shirt; buttons
1. Find yourself a long black dress. If there?s no buttons, sew them on.
2a. Wear a white shirt underneath the dress.
2b. Cut collar and cuffs from a white shirt and sew these on to the dress.
I got Saffy to make mine for me. She added in details such as the slightly puffed shoulders and the correct style collar and cuffs.

Wig

Cameo brooch
Thanks to Ashford Wyrd, this brooch is a Cameo brooch, matching the original American Gothic painting. It about 1cm deep with a dusy pink backing to the ivory face. I suggest any large dusky pink brooch pinned at the top of the collar.

Overdress
YOU NEED: Brown floral patterned material; white trim
The overdress is a very close copy of the one from the original American Gothic painting. It is ankle length, brown in colour with a pink and blue flower pattern. There is also a yellow embroidery within the pink flower heads, so go as accurate or not as you wish!
1. Create a loose cocoon around a you-sized person of the material. Mark where the arm holes should be and the neck line. For easy access, leave it open at the back. Then cut out the arm holes and neck line.
2. Add the trimming around all edges (except the back is this is rarely seen – save yourself some work).
3. Close the back in any way you see fit – neck tie etc.

Black shoes
Anything black with a heel will do. You could aim for black patent slip side Mary Janes if you want.

Magenta Timewarp Total cost of complete outfit ~ ?30

Most conventions and showings that people go to, if they’re going as Magenta, they pick this one. Personally, if you don’t want to be too much of a clone, I would suggest something else like the dinner or lab scene. You can buy a ‘Costume In A Bag’ version of the whole thing for ?25 and build on it or follow the steps below.

Dress
YOU NEED: black dress; old white shirt; black buttons
1. Slice the black dress down the front (if it’s not a shirt style dress). Sew on buttons and cut in button holes respectively.
2. Remove collar and cuffs from old shirt.
3. Once amending the dress to be knee length and elbow length, sew the white collars and cuffs to the black dress as appropriate.

White apron
YOU NEED: plain white material; frilly material/chiffon
1.? Cut out a square of material approx 35cm x 35cm. Round off the edges. Hem.
2. Create two 6cm wide long straps – measure from your waist, over your shoulder and down to your bum crack. Sorry to be blunt but hey, everyone knows what a bum crack is. Attach to top corners of apron front.
3. Create one 6cm wide long strap – measure around your waist and add 80cm. Attache the centre of this to the centre (and the rest) of the top edge of the apron front.
4. To wear, tie all your straps together!
5. Sew frilly material (5cm wide) around apron front.
More detailed instructions care of Mina here, here and here.

White ‘doily’
YOU NEED: plain white material; frilly material/chiffon; hair clip
1. Measure the width of your hand outstretched (=HAND)
2. Cut out a circle from the plain white material, HAND width.
3. Around this circle of material, sew a strip of the frill material. Use the same amaterial to create two 1 inch strands of material coming out from the back of the head piece.

Sheer stockings and suspenders
The tops of the stockings are often visible in the opening of the front dress, so don’t worry if people can see more leg than normal!

Black granny boots
Recently there’s been a burst of? boots on the market. Good search terms are ‘granny’, ‘witch’ and ‘pixie. Although mine are lace ups, the originals are button up with a kitten heel. You go for what’s comfy!

Magenta Lab Total cost of complete outfit ~ ?30+

This is the same as the Timewarp outfit less the frilly apron/doily, plus the following:

Apron
Get a pack of white disposable aprons. Saves money in the long run!

Face mask
YOU NEED: pale pink fabric; pale pink/white elastic/ribbon
1. Cut the material into the shape as shown.
2. Make two elastic loops, each long enough to go from the side of the mask to round your ear. Alternatively, add a strip of elastic to the rear of the mask, as pictured.
Thanks to Ruth for confirming the colour of this mask!

Underwear
YOU NEED: knickers; bra; sequins
Take your underwear and glue/sew scattered sequins all over.. Leave at least a 2cm gap between sequins.

Black sheer robe
YOU NEED: black sheer babydoll robe; white/pink maribou; glue
1. Keep a look out on your local market on the ‘sexy’ stalls. They normally have a sheer robe, knee length.
2. Glue the maribou trim around the cuffs and around the bottom of it. Sewing it is a right bugger and I can’t get the hang of it. Let me know if you work out a good tactic!

Don’t forget – Magenta only wears one stocking in this scene, if you want to be really film accurate :o )

Black sheer dress
Many huge thanks to Nikki Cross for this entry!
YOU NEED: black chiffon (Nikki used 3 metres); dark green/purple sequin thread; sleeveless top to help with measurements
1. Draw a diagram for yourself. Split the slip into three sections; the back, the left panel and the right panel.
2. Get your own measurements (for example; width of back of neck, around the underarm shoulder area, length from back of neck to knee) and apply it to your diagram. This will help you cut the right amount of material but also ensure that it will fit you perfectly! Use the sleeveless top to help with measurements.
3. Mark out each of the three sections onto the material, allowing an inch for hemming and joining. Cut out carefully as this frays easily.
4. Sew together the three sections, remembering to hem the arm holes, neck line, bottom and front joining edges of the slip.
5. Sew on the sequins, halfway down the joining edge (just below bra)
6. Use a hook and eye to fasten the left and right panels at the front.
Mine was made by chopping the sleeves and collars off of a sheer overdress and shortening it.
